Boat autopilot post by rocketboy07 » fri feb 10, 2012 5:08 am so i am looking at building a simple auto pilot for a boat that for the most part just keeps it in a straight line once a heading is set and have a few questions before i start..
Re: diy autopilot its going to be fun to see what autopilots we have in a few years time. as i understand dave, the problem is to get a rapid correction on a boat that is going many different vectors at once- like a multihull skimming over the water sideways.. Making a boat autopilot using a linear actuator for under $350 actuator mounting bracket : a mounting bracket was fabricated from steel to hold the linear actuator. checking the orientation . actuator will be mounted in this manner. the bracket will attach to the transom. i selected a 9 inch actuator, 12 vdc deluxe model. bracket mount to transom. I can't offer much help on other alternatives - but i do have a raytheon st4000+ tiller autopilot and find it very good. it appears to be sized well for the boat..
